Terms of Service

November 2, 2026. These terms are an agreement between you and Greg Carpenter Institute Inc., a Nevada corporation, for regretoric.com, the shelf called Regretoric.

Regretoric is a place to write a regret with some craft, and to read what other people set down. There are no accounts. Reading is open. Writing, notes, votes, and reports are offers we can accept, hold, or refuse.

Using the shelf

You may read anything that is published. You may write a letter or a one-line regret, leave a short note, mark a piece “Well said” or “I relate,” and send a report. Anonymous is the default. A short name is optional, and it is a byline, not an identity we verify.

The shelf is for people 13 and older. If you are under the age of majority where you live, use it with a parent or guardian who accepts these terms.

What you may set down

A piece has to stand on its own. The writing form refuses:

A first-person note of crisis is not stored. The page answers with the 988 Lifeline in the United States, and asks you to reach a local emergency line or a person you trust anywhere else. Regretoric is a shelf of sentences. It is not a clinic, a lawyer, or an emergency service.

Your words

You keep the copyright in what you write. You promise the words are yours to post: your experience, told in your own sentences, or language you have the right to use.

By setting a piece or a note down, you give Greg Carpenter Institute Inc. a non-exclusive license to store it, display it, quote a short excerpt, and make the ordinary copies needed to run the site, including backups and the small images used when a page is shared. The license is royalty-free and lasts while the piece is on the shelf, and for a short time afterward in backups. If we remove a piece from public view, we stop displaying it. You can still use your own words anywhere else.

Marks, notes, and reports

“Well said” is about the writing. “I relate” is about the life in it. A note is for resonance, not for correcting the author. One network can leave each kind of mark once on a piece.

A report is a request that a person look. Four separate reports hold a letter. Three hold a note. The reason chosen in the form is checked and then discarded. What we keep is the count, and a hash so the same network cannot report the same piece twice. An editor can feature a piece, hold it, remove it, or restore it. We can also refuse a piece that never should have been public. We do not promise to publish anything, or to keep the shelf up forever.

How we limit abuse

Posting, notes, votes, and reports pass through checks meant to keep scripts and promoters out. Those checks include a minimum time on the form, a honeypot, and Cloudflare Turnstile in production. For rate limits and for one mark per piece, we store a hash derived from the network address. We do not store the address itself, and we do not build a profile from it. The cookie policy describes the cookies and the measurement and advertising tools.

Ads

The site may show advertisements through Google AdSense. The letters are not sold to advertisers. Google’s use of information for ads is described in the cookie policy and in Google’s advertising policy.

The shelf as it is

The shelf is offered as it stands. Other people’s regrets are their accounts, not ours, and not advice. We do not warrant that the site will be uninterrupted, that a piece will stay up, or that a sentence on the shelf is accurate. To the extent the law allows, Greg Carpenter Institute Inc. is not liable for indirect or consequential damages, or for what a reader does with someone else’s regret. If a law where you live does not allow a limit like that, the limit applies only as far as that law allows.

If your piece harms someone, you are responsible for the words you chose to publish.

Taking a piece down

Use Send report on the piece. An editor sees the writing and the report count, not the reason you picked. Privacy, harassment, and a piece that is not a regret are all reasons to report. If a piece uses your copyrighted words without permission, report it. When we can see that the words are not the writer’s to post, we remove them from the public shelf.

Changes

We may update these terms. The date at the top is the version in force. Continuing to read or write after that date means you accept the updated terms. The license you already gave for a piece that is still on the shelf stays in place.

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Nevada. Disputes are brought in the state or federal courts in Nevada. If a law where you live requires a local forum, or a local rule that cannot be waived, that law still applies to that point. If one sentence here cannot be enforced, the rest still stands.
