Cookie policy
November 2, 2026. Greg Carpenter Institute Inc., a Nevada corporation, operates regretoric.com. This page describes cookies and similar storage on that site.
A cookie is a small file the browser keeps for a site. We use one of our own, and only for the editor. Measurement and advertising cookies come from Google. The writing check may involve Cloudflare.
The cookie we set
rr_mod. Set only after a successful sign-in on the private editor page. It remembers that the editor is signed in. It is HttpOnly, so page scripts cannot read it, and it lasts 12 hours. In production it is sent only over HTTPS. Readers do not get this cookie. Clearing it signs the editor out.
Measurement
Google Analytics, through Firebase, records that a page was opened. A page view includes the path, the title, and the usual technical notes Google attaches: browser, general device, and approximate region. It does not include the text of a letter.
Google typically sets _ga and a cookie named for the measurement ID. They can last up to two years and are used to tell one browser from another across visits. Google’s description is in How Google uses cookies and the Google privacy policy.
Advertising
Google AdSense may show ads. AdSense and its partners can set cookies such as IDE on doubleclick.net, and __gads or __gpi on this site, to measure ads, limit how often you see one, and personalize them. Those cookies can last for months.
You can review or turn off ad personalization at Google ad settings. Google describes the advertising cookies at Advertising and Advertising cookies.
The writing check
The form that accepts a letter uses Cloudflare Turnstile in production, to tell a person from a script. The result is a token sent with the form. Turnstile may set a short-lived Cloudflare cookie to finish that check. We use it for the check, and we do not use it to follow you around the web. Cloudflare’s notice is in the Cloudflare privacy policy.
What we store that is not a cookie
A published piece keeps its title, text, category, the byline you typed, the time, and the counts of marks, notes, and reports. For limits and for one vote or report per piece, we store a hash made from the network address and a secret. The address itself is not stored. Rate-limit records expire with their window. The vote and report hashes stay with the piece so the same network cannot mark or report it again. Report reasons are not stored.
We do not sell the letters, and we do not build an account or a profile of a reader.
Refusing cookies
You can delete cookies, or block them, in the browser. Blocking Google’s cookies means Analytics and AdSense learn less about the visit, and some ads may be less relevant or may not load. Blocking the editor cookie only signs the editor out. Blocking every cookie can also interfere with the writing check.
Industry opt-out pages include YourAdChoices and Your Online Choices.
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, Google expects a choice before advertising and measurement cookies are used for those purposes. This page describes what the site uses. The browser controls above are available to everyone.
