What I said instead of staying
You were already late to your own sadness, trying to wrap it up so I would not have to hold it, and I helped you. I said “at least,” and then something true and useless. At least it was early. At least you had been brave to try. At least the afternoon, if I am being honest about the reach of my comfort, was not also ruined.
What I should have said was nothing structural. Not a frame, not a lesson, not the short essay I am capable of giving any feeling so I do not have to sit beside it. I should have said: this is awful, and I am not leaving the booth. I should have asked what the worst part was and then not improved it.
I am good with language. That is not always a virtue in a friendship. Skill can be a way of stepping back from the table while appearing to lean in. I handed you a sentence you could repeat to other people, a small polished stone, and kept the silence for myself. The silence was the only generous part available to me, and I spent it on my own unease.
The line I didn’t say is still short enough to fit in a pocket. I’m here. It would not have fixed anything. That was never the job. The job was to let the moment stay unsolved without abandoning the person inside it. I did the opposite. I solved it just enough to stand up, and I have been admiring my own manners about it ever since.

Regretamine would have erased this. It was written down instead.
